Fiber Arts
4 Monday Evenings, 3 hour classes - $160

In each of the four times we meet students will learn a technique and start a new projects. We will be inspired by books and samples of Mokuba free lace, Nuno felt, wet felt and needle felting. We will explore other fiber crafts including early American type rag coiled baskets and yarn sewing onto knitted items. If time permits wool spinning will be demonstrated and students will have an opportunity to try this.
Materials fee $25 payable to the instructor. (Limit, 10)

Drawing: The Simple Little Secrets of Drawing

Instructor: Randi Dubnick
This course is for people who don’t think they can draw, or who want to improve their drawing ability. It is designed to make a stronger connection between the student's hand and eye. Teaches approaches to drawing that aid the student with issues of self-criticism that may block creativity. It will include some simple secrets of drawing faces, figures, objects, and landscapes. Also tackles composition, line, texture, and some basic perspective. Students will work with pencil, marker, ink, and pastel on paper; and will be encouraged to keep a sketchbook so they can practice outside of class. (Limit, 10)

An Introduction to Watercolor

Session I
In these introductory classes we will explore the basics of watercolor painting. We will discuss materials, color wheel and will spend much time experimenting with mixing colors. We will explore the unique qualities of watercolor through basic techniques such as staining, glazing, and its wet and dry properties. The general structure of composition including perspective, line and form will also be discussed, as well as subject matter, both from life and imaginary. We will seek inspiration from the work of the masters and contemporary artists during
each class.(Limit. 10)

Session II

In this series of classes we will continue the work we have began in session I (although you are welcome and encouraged to join even if you have not participated in session I). Based on our practices and discoveries we will try to find our own style and voice. We will also try to combine watercolor with other mediums such as pencils, conte crayons and pastels to enhance our work. Following a more contemporary tradition, we will experiment with altering the surface by adding other matters such as salt or alcohol, as well as subtracting from the surface by scraping and sanding.(Limit,10)

 

An Introduction to Oil Painting

Painting from Observation
This course will explore the fundamental techniques of painting from direct perception. Emphasis will be on understanding the properties and attributes of oil paint, strengthening observation skills, composition, color relationships, and creating accurate representations of light on objects. Class critiques included. Open to beginning and intermediate painters.

Faces and Figures: An introduction to drawing the body
4 Friday Mornings, $120

This drawing class will begin the drawing exploration of the human figure, and face portraiture. Learn the fundamentals of drawing the human body and facial form through viewing master works, and viewing a live model in the studio. Explore the landscape of the body and face by its proportions, depth and shape. The fundamentals of line, color, contour, value, and hue will also be explored utilizing varied drawing mediums. This class is for all skill levels.

Printmaking: The Art of Mono-printing: An Introduction to Printmaking
3 Friday afternoons, 3 hour classes - $100
BA111 November 7th-21st
Time: 1-4 pm

Location: Redbrick Art Center, Workshop Room
Students in this basic monotype printing course will have the opportunity to create singular prints using oil based inks while learning how to use a printing press. The emphasis is on the fun, and surprising results that occur when one prints on a press, one print at a time. The first class begins with a quick demo, then on to each person doing some prints. The second class the students learn about "double drop", putting the first print through the press a second time. And the third meeting the students will explore "chine colle"; a kind of collage+print combination.
Instructor uses oil paints as ink, but students may prefer to bring their own. Large sheets of Rives BFK for sale ($3.79 per sheet) which is the best paper for this process. Bring rubber gloves for cleanup, and a roll of paper towels.

 

Warm Glass Fusion: The Art of GLASS: - $150
4 Wednesday evenings, 3 hour classes
Dates: September 24-Novemner 5th BA96
Time: 6:30 – 9:30 pm
Instructor: James Durrett
Location: Redbrick Art Center, Workshop Room
You will learn technical and practical methods used to manipulate glass into objects of your own design (examples dish, coaster, art objects). Each class will consist of a project so you will have four completed projects when you are complete. The pieces turn out beautiful. (Limit 10)


Printmaking: Independent Study - $220
Want to work independently? Experienced printers can work independently and have access to the studio. Whelan press available, flat file for storage, lots of table space, peace and quiet.
9 hours a week maximum
6 week requirement available on a rolling basis.
